Nortel in India

Nortel is a recognized leader in delivering communications capabilities that enhance the human experience, ignite and power global commerce, and secure and protect the world’s most critical information. Our next-generation technologies, for both service providers and enterprises, span access and core networks, support multimedia and business-critical applications, and help eliminate today’s barriers to efficiency, speed and performance by simplifying networks and connecting people with information.

Nortel established its first office in India in 1991, as the country began the process of liberalization for the telecommunication industry. Since then Nortel has rapidly evolved into a major telecommunications player in India, working out of offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Nortel's solutions are sold and supported in India by a network of distributors and resellers as part of the Nortel nPower Channel Partner Program.

In India as in elsewhere across the world, Nortel's business units are aligned into two main categories: Carrier Networks (incorporating Wireless Networks, Wireline Networks and Optical Networks) and Enterprise Networks. Nortel offers a strong suite of products and solutions for customers across these two broad categories, including:

  • Voice/Data Networks and IP telephony
  • Multimedia Services and Applications, including VPNs
  • Personalized IP Services
  • Multimedia Services Platforms
  • Contact Centres and Voice Portals
  • Wireless Broadband (from total 3G Solutions to Wireless LAN and Wireless Mesh Networks)
  • End-to-end Broadband Solutions (including Optical Ethernet, Multiservice Packet, Multiservice Optical, Storage Network and Ultra-broadband Access Solutions)

Leadership in Key Segments

Nortel has garnered leadership positions in India's optical transport market and in the enterprise arena - especially in the premier enterprise space - call center and business process outsourcing (BPO). It has also firmly established its footprint in the managed services arena with the five-year managed services deal signed recently with the Bharti Group. In Interactive Voice Response (IVR), Nortel has replicated its global leadership in India with a No. 1 ranking. Nortel’s customer base in India has been growing consistently across both carrier and enterprise segments over the past 3-4 years, resulting in 10-fold growth in revenues since 2002.

Investing in India

The strength of Nortel's commitment to India is apparent not only by its strong working relationships with the country's leading carrier and enterprise customers, but also by the significant role it has played in the growth of large software houses such as Infosys, WIPRO, Tata Consultancy Services and Sasken Technologies.

Another facet of Nortel’s commitment to India is its growing R&D thrust in the country. In recent times all major Nortel Technology Labs around the world have assigned part of their development activity to India. The acquisition of Tasman Networks Nortel Technology Excellence Centre (formerly Tasman Networks) has also strengthened Nortel’s R&D efforts in India. The focus of the Nortel Technology Excellence Centre (NTEC) is on advanced Routers, Ethernet Switching, Security, and Voice over IP (VoIP) for the enterprise market. The NTEC initiative is yet another example of how Nortel is integrating itself with the Indian local industry to serve its customers better.

Carrier Networks

Nortel has worked with carrier companies worldwide to implement high-performance networks using the GSM/GPRS/EDGE portfolio of standards and help them build metropolitan optical rings based on WDM or next-generation SONET/SDH platforms, capable of transporting multiple streams of uncompressed broadcast video, video-on-demand, Internet access, high speed data connectivity, commercial services and voice over IP, all over a single fiber pair.

In India, we are working with leading carrier companies in both private and government sectors, helping them build their ambitious network projects. Nortel’s carrier customers in India include:

  • Reliance Infocomm - As exclusive optical transport equipment vendor, Nortel supplied Reliance's 60,000kms national optical backbone, India's first 10G DWDM network and the largest in Asia, as well as a new CDMA digital wireless network in the state of Gujarat.
  • Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) - A GSM/GPRS digital wireless network in southern and eastern India, with capacity for seven million subscribers, for the country's largest telecommunications company.
  • BPL Mobile Communications - A major GSM network expansion in the state of Maharashtra.
  • Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) - A DWDM/SDH optical backbone interconnecting India's top 20 traffic routes for India's leading gas company and the country's first "carrier's carrier."
  • Eastern Railway - A next generation GSM-R (GSM for Railways) communication system in the state of West Bengal.
  • Bharti Group - A high-capacity optical SDH backbone, spanning 35,000kms for Bharti Telesonic's One India brand; a fixed-line Bharti TouchTel network in New Delhi and the state of Haryana.

Enterprise Networks

Nortel India has provided total call center solutions and data networking equipment to a broad range of Indian enterprise customers across multiple vertical markets and diverse geographical areas.

In the call center and BPO market, Nortel is fast emerging as the country's technology leader - with 16,000 agent positions deployed for such well known companies as Bharti AirTel, Tata Consultancy Services, Hinduja Technology Media Telecom (HTMT), iSeva, Office Tiger and ICICI OneSource among others.

Nortel is also gaining strong traction in the data networking space with clients like Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Indian Institute of Science, Sungard Automated Securities, Apollo Health Street, Logica and Cognizant Technology Solutions. Nortel has also supplied advanced solutions to five of India's top ISPs and to virtually all of India's stock exchanges, with the Bombay Stock Exchange representing the largest installed base of networking routers anywhere in South Asia.

To meet the present and future needs of its growing enterprise customer base, Nortel is focused on the delivery of converged voice and data networks, IP telephony, multimedia contact centres, wireless LAN and Wireless Mesh Networks, and working with carriers to provide the metro optical connectivity required to support enterprises in deploying security-based, data-protection solutions such as business continuity, disaster recovery and storage area networking.

With a complete portfolio of networking capabilities to address specific verticals like Government and Defence, IT/ITES, Finance and SMB, Nortel is poised to serve its customers better and consolidate its leadership in the enterprise networking space.

Partners in India

In India, Nortel's enterprise solutions are sold and supported by a network of distributors and resellers as part of the Nortel nPower Channel Partner Program - a strategic Asia Pacific initiative designed to arm regional channel partners with in-depth knowledge of Nortel's comprehensive voice and data products as well as the technology and support skills that can help enterprise customers get more out of their networks. Indian nPower channel partners can be found on the Web at www.nortel.com/locator. Nortel has also developed a specific partner program to address the increasingly large SMB segment in India.
