Nortel Networks Teams to Create High-Performance Internet Village in California

Will Connect Homes, Businesses in Madera County Development for Data, Voice, Video

BOSTON – Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] is unleashing the power of the high-performance Internet to provide the communications network for a proposed ‘e-Village’ on the outskirts of Fresno, Calif.

Located in Madera County, Calif., this planned, high-performance Internet village for telecommuters is expected to be one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated Master Planned Communities (MPCs). It will ultimately include more than 30,000 homes, along with office, business and hospitality centers.

Under an estimated US$5.6 million contract announced today with Rio Mesa Utility Services LLC, Nortel Networks will design, install and support a comprehensive voice, broadcast video and data network for the first 500 units.

Nortel Networks also announced today a complete portfolio of networking solutions for on-site service providers (OSPs) seeking to offer the benefits of the high-performance Internet in ‘digital communities.’ The Madera County e-Village will use solutions from this new Nortel Networks portfolio.

Nortel Networks high-performance Internet capabilities can provide directly to the home office the speed, security, Internet telephony and e-services found throughout corporate America. They can also give developers the ability to digitally integrate households, schools, shopping centers and businesses to promote digital interaction and inclusion throughout the community.

Nortel Networks solutions will also enable new, high-end consumer services, such as video on-demand; electronic community bulletins to promote local arts, sports, civic and school activities; community amenities such as 24-hour tee time and tennis court reservations; and remote video monitoring of day care, play areas and community events.

The Madera County e-Village is being developed as a ‘green’ community that will aid the environment through reduced traffic, congestion and smog, as well as other benefits realized through telecommuting. The e-Village is being created to offer Silicon Valley professionals affordable housing in an electronically enabled, broadband community.

“The e-Village is a collaboration of ideas from Nortel Networks, California State University Fresno, the Chawanakee School District, Edison Utility Services, Sierra Foothills Public Utilities District, Cal-Trans, and Property Development Group,” said Dennes Coombs, president, Property Development Group. “Nortel Networks approached this opportunity with a true understanding of our business drivers. Twenty percent of Nortel Networks global workforce telecommutes. They understand the process, and bring a lot of business consulting, technical expertise, guidance and overall insight to the table.”

Nortel Networks solutions for OSPs can enable next generation voice, broadcast video and data services for MPCs, Multi Dwelling Units (MDUs), Multi Tenant Units (MTUs), and Multi Hospitality Units (MHUs). These solutions draw from a wide range of capabilities, including Ethernet, HFC, DSL, and next generation Wireless and Optical Internet.

Nortel Networks solutions for the Madera County project and other master planned communities are designed to deliver the power of the Optical Internet to simulate the high-speed, in-office experience. These solutions also promote localized business-to-consumer eCommerce by allowing local merchants to offer targeted advertising, on-line order placement and restaurant reservations.

The market to serve multi-unit residential and business communities is projected to reach US$4.8 billion in the United States by 2004, according to a December 2000 report from Cahners In-Stat.

Nortel Networks is a global Internet and communications leader with capabilities spanning Optical, Wireless, Local, Personal Internet and eBusiness. The Company had 2000 U.S. GAAP revenues of US$30.3 billion and serves carrier, service provider and enterprise customers globally. Today, Nortel Networks is creating a high-performance Internet that is more reliable and faster than ever before. It is redefining the economics and quality of networking and the Internet, promising a new era of collaboration, communications and commerce. Visit us at www.nortelnetworks.com.
