Telstra 3G-Enabling National Wireless Data Network with Nortel Networks TechnologyCDMA2000 1X to Support Wireless Corporate Email, Intranet and Internet Browsing SYDNEY, Australia – Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications and information services company, is using solutions from Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] to upgrade its CDMA (code division multiple access) wireless network with third generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X digital wireless technology in selected centres around Australia. Building on an existing CDMA network supplied by Nortel Networks to Telstra in 2000, Telstra will deploy Nortel Networks Univity* solutions to enable CDMA2000 1X radio access with a simple card upgrade to Telstra’s existing Metro Cell base station equipment, as well as deliver a new packet-based core infrastructure. The upgrades will position Telstra to offer 3G services and improve spectral efficiency while driving down Telstra’s costs of delivering traffic across their network. Telstra’s CDMA2000 1X rollout has been completed in greater Sydney (including Newcastle & Wollongong), Melbourne (including Geelong, Lorne & along the Mornington Peninsula) and Victoria’s regional Gippsland centre of Sale, east of Melbourne, and upgrades are now underway in Canberra, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. “This new CDMA2000 1X-enabled network will position Telstra to offer advanced wireless data services such as checking corporate email, browsing intranets and internets at speeds comparable to a desktop computer,” said David Thodey, group managing director, Telstra Mobile. “The ease of upgrading our existing CDMA infrastructure was critical to our deployment, enabling us to maximize existing investment and drive down the cost of network ownership through networking efficiencies.” “3G is ushering in a new era in mobile communications, and the Univity portfolio offers some of the most efficient and cutting-edge Wireless Data Network technology in the industry,” said Steve Wood, president, Nortel Networks Australia and New Zealand. “Our experience and the breadth of wireless data solutions across core packet networks and next-generation wireless access technologies is enabling us to deliver a unique solution to Telstra and their Australian customers.” Products to be deployed for Telstra from Nortel Networks Univity CDMA2000 product portfolio include the Univity CDMA Metro Cell radio base station, Univity CDMA Base Station Controllers and Univity CDMA PDSN, based on Nortel Networks Shasta* platform. A CDMA leader since 1995, Nortel Networks has designed, installed and launched networks for more than 60 CDMA customers in 15 countries. Nortel Networks has deployed more than 15,000 CDMA2000 1X base stations around the world. The company continues to build on CDMA momentum in the Asia region with the announcement of a series of contracts signed with customers such as China Unicom and Ratelindo (in Indonesia).
