Low Cost, Layer 3 Access Routing Available on Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways

Nortel Networks* announced a new software upgrade that enables Nortel Networks Contivity* Secure IP Services Gateway to be deployed as a general-purpose, Internet Protocol (IP) access router for enterprises. Contivity Secure IP Services Gateway offers integrated security and IP processing features that can be activated via software license keys, and paid for, as needed.

This means, for example, that enterprises requiring only an IP access router today, but expected to need Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnels within the next quarter and firewalling capabilities within the year, will be able to accomplish this by purchasing Contivity IP Services Gateway. They will be able to deploy the added capabilities seamlessly when required, and without the network downtime typically associated with such deployments.

Contivity IP Services Gateway Software Release 4.7 enables Layer 3 routing over both wide-area and local-area connections. In addition, Software Release 4.7 provides Frame Relay capabilities to the Contivity line. These Frame Relay capabilities enable simultaneous forwarding of unencrypted and IPsec VPN tunnel traffic over Permanent Virtual Circuits. Together, these new features provide industry-leading security, scalability and flexibility across a variety of enterprise networking environments.

Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways come with pre-integrated functions, including VPN tunneling, stateful firewall, Quality of Service, bandwidth management and other IP services. Contivity IP Services Gateways also support dynamic routing protocols – including Routing Information Protocol, and Open Shortest Path First – that are designed to eliminate the network performance impact associated with routing over encrypted VPN tunnels.

The software upgrade is generally available for the entire Contivity IP Services Gateway portfolio. In addition, new low-cost secure router packages are being made available for Contivity IP Services Gateway 1700 and 2700 series. These packages reduce the price for these platforms by up to 67 percent versus their cost when deployed as a VPN gateway solution for medium-large branch offices and enterprise customers.

Nortel Networks estimates that enterprises building new networks will be positioned to save as much as 50 percent in deployment costs over other solutions by consolidating all IP services into a single platform. The capability to activate and pay for security functions only when required protects enterprise network infrastructure investments by enabling deployment of a basic IP access router that can be upgraded remotely without ripping out routing infrastructure. In addition to curtailing installation costs, operational expenses related to training, power consumption and real estate can likewise be reduced.
