Virginia State Police ‘Lock Down’ Infrastructure with Security Solutions from Nortel NetworksTighter Information Security Exceeds Federal Requirements, Wins Virginia Governor’s Technology Award SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Virginia State Police have standardized on secure networking solutions from Nortel Networks* [NYSE/TSX: NT] to promote the integrity, security and performance of their communications infrastructure. These solutions are expected to help enhance the safety of citizens and police officers by allowing Virginia law enforcement agencies to share information more quickly and securely than before. For example, a highway patrol officer can now determine if a car has been stolen, check the suspect’s criminal history, and find out whether or not the suspect has a concealed weapons permit – all with a single request. “We wanted a network that we could leverage to our agencies’ benefit, and on which we could run any application,” said Naseem Reza, chief information officer, Virginia State Police. “Virginia law enforcement and its agency partners are now connected into one intelligent, secure system.” The Virginia State Police network now meets the stringent requirements of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Crime Information Center, enabling greater coordination with federal law enforcement agencies. It also meets Homeland Security and FBI mandates for encryption of law-enforcement information. Using Nortel Networks Contivity* Secure IP Services product family, the Virginia State Police network is designed to provide both greater capacity and carrier-class ‘five nines’ (99.999 percent) reliability. This has allowed the state to realize significant cost savings with a high-performance network. “Not only have we saved money right off the bat by deploying Nortel Networks security solution but, because the VPN is very flexible, we expect some considerable savings down the road in not having to buy new circuits,” Reza said. “Bandwidth is no longer an issue.” The Virginia State Police network provides law enforcement officers with secure, highly-available access to criminal history and other information from such state databases as the Automated Fingerprint Information System, the Tactical Information Processing System, and the Virginia Criminal Information Network. The network also provides real-time access to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles information systems, as well as those of other states and Federal law enforcement agencies. This includes the FBI National Crime Information Center and the National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System. “The ability to make a network secure and yet fully-accessible to the right people when they need it is the challenge we accepted,” said Atul Bhatnager, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Data Networks, Nortel Networks. “Working closely with our partners and the customer, we have helped the Virginia State Police exceed their requirements. The network’s ultimate measure of success is the utility it brings to every law enforcement officer who puts his or her life on the line each day.” The Virginia State Police received the 2003 Governor’s Technology Award at the Commonwealth of Virginia Information Technology Symposium. The award recognized the Virginia State Police for “deploying a virtual private network to link numerous systems and applications to improve public safety, enhance performance and reliability and decrease response time. The network results in government efficiency and cost-savings while enhancing citizen services.” The network managed services provided by the Virginia Information Technologies Agency are powered by Contivity IP Services Gateways – including Contivity 4600 – from headquarters sites and Contivity 600 at field offices. The network also incorporates Nortel Networks Passport* 8600 Routing Switches, Nortel Networks Alteon applications-enhanced product line, and Nortel Networks BayStack* Ethernet switching equipment. Contivity Secure IP Services Gateways deliver security and IP services in a single, integrated platform. With IP routing, VPN, firewall, policy management and Quality of Service, a single Contivity device offers IP services that normally require multiple, purpose-built devices. Designed for enterprise networks, Contivity products can be installed as VPN gateways, IP access routers, or firewalls as required. In May 2004, Contivity Secure IP Services Gateway received the 2004 Network Computing “Well-Connected” award as the industry’s best VPN solution at Networld+Interop 2004 in Las Vegas. Contivity Secure IP Services Gateway also received the Network Computing “Tester’s Choice” award for superior performance in March 2004.
