Why do I need it?

Voice service over Internet Protocol lines

Internet protocol service provides high-quality voice service over multiservice packet networks. VoIP is used by wireless, local, long-distance and cable providers. With VoIP, service providers can introduce -- or evolve to -- a single voice network that is IMS-ready for video, data and more.

How do I do it?

Introduce voice or Evolve to an IP network to enable multimedia services

Nortel's suite of VoIP Infrastructure solutions includes:

Local VoIP
Nortel's Local VoIP Solution delivers the traditional Class 5 service suite across a converged, packetized IP or ATM network, designed to enable carriers to offer local services, tandem services and enterprise connectivity. The solution helps simplify network topology while providing the infrastructure for a new generation of advanced voice, data and multimedia services. With the Local VoIP Solution, you can support end-office replacement, residential line growth and the delivery of hosted business services.

Wireless VoIP
With Nortel, you can deliver next-generation solutions and smoothly migrate existing GSM and CDMA wireless core networks and services to a multi-service, packet-based wireless network. The Wireless VoIP solution uses a scalable, distributed yet simplified architecture that supports accelerated growth and rapid deployment of third-generation Voice over IP services using UMTS and other 3G standards. This simplified network, built from high-density, multi-purpose components, lowers capital and operating costs, improves bandwidth utilization and makes it easier to expand geographically.

Nortel's VoIP solution for wireless carriers is based on the Nortel next-generation packet networking portfolio, including the Superclass Softswitches: the Communication Server 2000 (CS 2000) and the Communication Server 2000-Compact (CS 2000-Compact); the Nortel series of market-leading voice gateways: the Packet Voice Gateways (PVGs); and the Multiservice Switches (MSSs) for either IP or ATM backbones.

Long Distance VoIP
Nortel's VoIP solution for long-distance carriers delivers the traditional voice service suite across a converged, packetized IP network, designed to enable carriers to offer long distance services, tandem services and enterprise connectivity. This low-risk solution helps lower transport and capital costs while delivering full-featured, carrier-grade telephony, data and multimedia.
